www.commoncraft.com A short explanation of how operating systems and programs work together to make computers useful and customizable.

I assume you mean that it should say GNU/Linux. Most folks just abbreviate it to Linux and it is most definitely an Operating System (OS). It manages computer resources, provides a user interface, and launches applications.
check my channel out i have a new site and i will be making tutorial
i really want a laptop
“Technically” an OS is the smallest piece of software needed to run any other software, ie a layer that “simplifies” access to hardware.
During the 80’s some people started diluting the meaning by calling other software bundled with the kernel for “OS”, often user land tools, like a CLI and/or libraries. This has been used by otherwise great men, like RMS, to further their own goals.
Nowadays people claim anything to be an OS, like a website (ie webos) and/or a complete Linux distribution.
well technically linux is not a OS
Goto:
osoftware(dot)webs(dot)com
For free software and games, register now!
I’d like to run Mac in my car =P
osoftware(dot)webs(dot)com
for free software aswell as the whole collection of these videos!!!
I do know Linux it is originated from Minix
I said it was unix based…”Darwin Kernel”
which is unix based
This is like saying that Linux is UNIX. Come on! Do you know what Linux mean? Linux Is Not UniX. OS X is based on NEXTSTEP and FreeBSD. It is NOT a UNIX kernel but it is compliant with the UNIX standard thus providing every command line tool and shell that UNIX support, just as Linux do.
Ohhhh Shit!
Oh god.. Who cares Mac’s are a combination proprietary software/hardware. to be honest the os mac uses has a Unix kernel (darwin). Stop arguing… its pointless and redundant.
Agreed
No shit sherlock..
What do you think OS stands for?
My point is that when you throw virtualization in it, using the name Mac instead of Mac OS to define the operating system just doesn’t make sense. You see? You have a Mac that run Mac that run Windows that could run Mac?! How can you run a Macintosh on windows when it’s not a software? But you could run Mac OS on Windows on Mac OS on a Mac. Now that make sense because we talk about software.
Why does one emulating the other have to do with what you call it? If you use a Mac to emulate Windows, it’s still just a Mac with the right software.
You do realize that doing this is wrong. Macintosh is describing the computer’s hardware, OS X is the operating system. You can’t shorten Mac OS to Mac because Mac can run Windows and Linux, which now just doesn’t make sense since you can’t run an OS on an other one. You need virtualization software to do so and even then, you can’t run a virtualized OS inside an other one which mean that you can’t run a virtual Windows on a virtual OS X. Then you can and can’t run Windows on Mac, if your right.
Kawazoe, most people shorten the official term “Mac OS” to “Mac”. Oh, and you don’t need to add it’s version number unless you want to specify which version one’s talking about. You can just say “Mac OS”, or simply “Mac” as most people have shortened it to.
i agree what u said
i agree what u said
Mac in NOT an operating system. It is called OS with it’s version number. OS X, OS 9, etc.
Think of it this way! XD
This REALLY simplifies things for beginning computer users, cellphone users, etc. Thanks!
